Road Trip 2016 - Day 29/30 (5/6th August) - Back to Walgett - visiting with McElhones again

We have now come full circle back to Walgett - where we really started this road trip.

We arrived on Friday in time to make lunch for Russ and help him finish mowing the lawn - and feed the clippings over the back fence to a couple of cows (in the paddock behind them).

Cindy arrived from school at 4.30pm - and it was fire on, wine out and enjoying being back in Walgett with these guys around the fire pit in the back yard.
And of course a few 'selfies' were on the cards!!!

Russ was working day shift all weekend - so we were on our own during the days.
And here he is looking sharp in that police uniform. Mr fixit doing hid own running repairs on one of the police vehicles at home.

It was the finale of a week of events  for the "Bulldust to Bitumen" festival in Walgett and Saturday morning Cindy was concocting a Chick Pea dish to enter into the festival cooking competition. Walgett region is a large producer of Chick Peas and their were various categories of the cooking competition - all with the same theme - they must contain chick peas.

She had it done and delivered to the competition site and we were off walking to downtown Walgett to check out the market stalls set up in the Main Street.  BUT - first stop was to get a coffee at the local popular venue 'Stones Throw'. It certainly was popular -- and we just had to fill in time checking out the gift lines they had in the shop whilst we were waiting. It was surprising to us what a great range of products they had available.

We checked out a few other places and then found the Men's Shed Sausage sizzle - and it was sausage sanga's all round for us three.

A retired baker lives locally on a property just out of Walgett - and Cindy purchased some of his famous cream horns for afternoon tea back at the house.  This guy apparently bakes for every market day they have in Walgett - large quantities of cream horns, butterfly cakes and sausage rolls. Cindy tells us he is always there at markets days early and with a big line up waiting to buy his wares -  then it's all gone in a flash and he is packed up and gone.  So we were lucky to get those cream horns today!!!  - and my god they were sooooo goooooodddd!!!!!!!!

Then we were off to check out the photography and arts competition entrants at the library and the entrants for the "Chick Pea" competition at the Information Centre.

Who would have guessed - our bloody fantastic cook Cindy took out runner up in her section of the competition. She is becoming a force to be reckoned with in the cooking comps here in Walgett - especially since taking out outright champion at the Walgett Show this year (her first year here) with her Banana Cake.
Way to Go Cindy!!!!!  We are very proud to know a Walgett Show champion!!!!  Pretty awesome to be seen with a celebrity in Walgett!!

An afternoon of beautiful sunshine in the back yard and then we were heading out for a walk at Helen's (friend of Cindy's - she works with at school) property - only short drive from town.
This is the entry to Helen and Greg's property - "Fairlands".

The rain gauge is mounted in a very pertinent pedastal - 'a person on their knees praying for rain'. For a lot of recent years that is what it for the farmers out here have been doing- hoping and praying for rain to come so they can sow and grow their crops. Fortunately this year the rains have come at the right time in good amounts and it looks like they are well on the way to a very productive year.
I hope it comes to fruition for them - I feel perhaps a lot might be riding on this years crops.

The three of us and Helen - and her three dogs - enjoy walking her property.
And moved two old horses to a new paddock ----

It's then we get to see her two soooo cute puppies - little fat things they are ----   AND ---- the two little orphaned lambs she is hand feeding (only 24hrs old).
There is little RIO - the Olympics are on now in Rio -- and --- "Holey" - because he was found stuck in a hole.   Both such cutie pies and still finding their legs!!!!!

The smallest is 'Rio' (a ewe) Helen tells us she is probably a twin -with 'Holey' a large single birth and is a little ram.  Did I say already how dammmm cute they are!!!!!

This Saturday night is "Dinner under the Stars" at Walgett showground - and we are treated to a Baked Dinner and dessert cooked by the CWA ladies for just $5.00. Shame it was cloudy and there were no stars to see as they also had a lady there with a telescope to show us the various highlights of the night sky.
