Road Trip 2017 - Day 9 (16th July) - Overnight at Jericho - Redbank Free Camp

Well today we said our goodbyes and finally made our way out of Lara Wetlands. I think we could just be back here again one day. It's just the spot for a quiet relaxing sojourn.

We are not away too early as we only plan to head to Redbank free camp at Jericho for the night. We have camped overnight here in 2013 with Cindy and Russ - when we enjoyed (Ha!!!! - Not!!) a cold shower down behind the toilets.

Our short journey into Barcaldine this morning provided us with a sighting of the biggest Wedge Tailed Eagle we have ever seen!!! There was some roadkill that the crows were partaking of on the road - but both Moores and I were trying to work out what was sitting off to the left hand side - thinking it looked like it could be a small roo.
We both realised at the same time - as we came close enough- that it was a massive "Wedgie"-  just sitting watching proceedings at the roadkill.
It was a fleeting view as we were travelling at about 90km /hr and there was no where to pull off the road - but the sight of it will be forever embedded in our brain - it was huge!!!

We arrived Jericho at for lunch (after a quick morning tea in Barcaldine) and found ourselves a good possie in the Redbank free camp.

We discovered pretty quickly, via a sign near the loos, that a fruit and veg truck - that does the rounds of many of these little outback towns - was due in Jericho now.  So we hot- footed it down to the local park where it sets up and lined up with the locals to make our selections and pay for our fruit and veg.

It's a massive set up with refrigerated shipping containers on the back of a semi trailer. Inside has a narrow walkway with shelves of goods down both sides - so it's pretty squishy getting around each other - but no one seemed to mind to much.  There were also shelves and tables set up on the outside.

The family that brings this truck to town is now living in Brissie and all the fruit and veg come from the Brisbane Markets. All the fruit and veg was relay good quality and not bad prices considering the cost to them to get it out to these places.
It is such a wonderful service for places like Jericho that have no general/ grocery store in town and have to travel a fair distance to be able to meet their grocery needs. There are apparently only 15 families living in the township of Jericho - but the truck often serves many more people due to the influx of travellers staying at the free camp down by the Jordan River.

You look around this little town and realise how different and difficult it is living here - with no grocery store and no doctor. They have a Bush Nursing Clinic - but this has restricted opening times - so best not to get sick outside these times!!

We settled in for some afternoon reading --

A walk along the river -- and a chat to some of our fellow travellers.  Pretty hard afternoon really!!!

A bit of trivia:  - Jericho derived it's name due to its location on the Jordan River!!!
