Day 28: Fossicking at Rubyvale

We were up early this morning and spent sometime around the rekindled campfire having a cooked breakfast that included muffins toasted over the fire coals.

With breakfast over we got all the fossicking gear set up and started in earnest to "try our luck" looking for sapphire and zircon gemstones.
Firstly we had to study the instructions -

We quickly had a bit of a production line going with Russ digging out the gravel and sieving out the larger stones, Moore washing the gravel and Cindy and Ruth doing the meticulous searching for gemstones in the washed gravel.

As it had turned out a very clear sunny day -we lasted only until lunchtime before we packed it in and dropped the hired fossicking gear back in town.

We did have lots of fun and put in lots of effort - BUT sad to say we had no luck.
So we will unfortunately all be returning to work after the holidays having not struck it lucky and found the elusive large sapphire that we had hoped for.

The guy at the shop viewed the little pile of rocks we had brought in for inspection and sadly confirmed that our efforts would go unrewarded.

We decided that a pub lunch at the Rubyvale Hotel was in order to cheer ourselves up. Here we were not disappointed as the food was excellent.
We did see a funny sign out the front of the pub -

It was Cassie who served us in the bar and she was getting a lot of jibbing about the sign.

After lunch we set off for our next overnight stop at the little town of Jericho - our free camp for the night was to be Jericho Community Park.

It was still very warm here in the afternoon but geez the cold shower was still pretty hard to take.
But the shower head on this outdoor shower was pretty special and had obviously been fashioned by some innovative camper from a plastic drink bottle.

We were not impressed that the showers were cold as this was not mentioned in the Camps book that we have. Especially when we found out that the free camp at the show ground had hot showers.

We were able to have a fire here and although we did not have a lot of firewood we still enjoyed a small fire for the evening. Yippee!!!
