Another early start today in our quest to reach Lawn Hill NP Saturday.
Leaving Macrossan Park we were on the road again at 7 am.
Unfortunately we did not have time to stop at Charters Towers,
Hughendon (some quick snaps shown here)
or Richmond on our way out the Flinders Highway ( that will have to be another trip to this section of the outback)
This was another long day in the car making our way further west to Julia Creek our overnight camp spot for the night.
We went through a large mob of cattle on the road just outside of our lunch stop - Richmond. This was a slow part of the journey weaving our way through the cattle as they decided to saunter across the road in our path.
We were following a big oversize load carrying some huge heavy machinery - we guess going out to one of the mines. We had got caught behind this truck twice today (don't think they could have taken a rest break at all).
It proves very handy - as well as entertaining having the UHF radio on board. We are able to communicate with oversize and the pilot vehicle to negotiate our way around them - had we not it could have been a very slow trip.
The girl in the pilot car was pretty bright and enthusiastic the first time we were behind them but later in the day she was clearly becoming tired and the spiel warning oncoming trucks of the dimensions of the oversize load was sounding somewhat 'worn down' - it went from a lot of details to just 'yeah mate we're 3.2 m at the wheels'
She did however inform us that one of the hatches on the tvan was 'flapping around' - so that was a small repair job we had to do when we stopped ( all good now we think)
We stayed in the caravan park at Julia Creek as we were hankering for a hot shower. This place had the most amazing camp kitchen with a massive fridge for campers- never seen anything cleaner anywhere and also had a big screen tv.
We met a couple from Sydney here - he had retired 9 weeks ago and they had been on the road for 8 weeks - living the dream!!!
Tonight there was a Country music band at the hotel- we were too tired to go - but could hear them anyway - with the music to lull us to sleep.
