Day 14 - Experience Boulia
Boulia is 300km south of Mt Isa at the junction of the Diamantina and Kennedy Development roads.
The town is best known for the legendary Min Min Light, a strange spectral light that can appear, hover, disappear and reappear with an eerie will of its own. Most often described as a hovering luminescent ball. Scientists are baffled to explain this phenomenon and there are a lot of bush yarns about the Min Min Light.
The first Europeans to pass through the area were Burke and Wills on their journey from Melbourne to the Gulf of Carpentaria in the late 1800's. Halfway between Windorah and Camooweal, Boulia became an important point on the stock route.
This poem by a local author I think well captures the community of Boulia:
Boulia Kids
Boulia kids, full of fun
Live and play in the outback sun
Happy, healthy, cheeky and free
They laugh and smile and wave to me
Boulia kids, real good mates
Meet their friends at the pool gate
Dive and swim in the swimming pool
Race each other home from school
Boulia kids know heat & flies
Boulia kids know 'ever blue' skies
Boulia kids love the smell of rain
When, at last, it comes again
Boulia kids are lucky, like me
To live a life that is so free
No traffic, no buses, no gangs & no smog
Just walking home with your mate and your dog
Boulia kids might move away
Go to the city to work some day
But Boulia hearts will ever stay true
Cause Boulia kids love Boulia, don't you?
