Wednesday 2nd April, 2014: Melrose to Yorke Peninsula

The forecast cool change hit overnight and we awoke to a misty cold morning here in Melrose. A good 10 degrees or more cooler than yesterday had been.

It was a beautiful pink sunrise and there was a heavy mist hanging over Mt Remarkable.

It had got really windy during the night when the weather change hit and had showers has started as morning broke.
Our plan was to get up and try to get packed up before it started seriously raining. Our plan went well and we had the tvan all packed up, bar locking up the back hatch, before we started on breakfast. We were going to eat in the car if we had to - but the rain held off and we were able to finish up breakfast and head off without much rain at all.

Today we are heading partway down the Yorke Peninsula.

Our first stop was the little township of Laura - where we headed into a local coffee shop. Then off to the local butcher to stock up on meat.

Next stop was Crystal Brook where we had a walk around the main drag looking at all the lovely old buildings.

We also happened across this unusual looking bus as we passed by the local caravan park.

From Crystal Brook we head to Port Broughton a small village on the Spencer Gulf.  We decided on some lovely snapper fish cakes at the local pub (pictured below) for lunch. They were scrummy!!

We were not too impressed with the $33 they wanted at one of the local caravan parks for the night - and the other park looked pretty dumpy. So we headed further down the Yorke Peninsula to Wallaroo.

Wallaroo is a port town as well and has huge silos on the seafront in the main town where sizeable ships come in to load up wheat at the main jetty.

We ended up booking into North Beach Caravan Park - which was a more acceptable price for the night. The park is right on the beach - and we can see around the cove to the main jetty and the grain silos as well as out accross the gulf.

On checking with the office we decided to walk into the main town. We have found people very nice  - and friendly here in SA and today we had 2x perfect strangers offer us a lift into town - one of the cleaners at the office who was just leaving to head in there and the other a guy we asked directions from and he was just heading in to pick up his son from school. They probably had thought we were mad when we declined saying we wanted to walk it - as it turned out to be a good 3km walk each way.

Here are some of the beautiful old buildings in this old port town.

The old railway station has now been converted to the local library

When we finally got back to the caravan park we got our wines and headed down to the beach for a sunset drink and look around down on the foreshore.
I dipped my toe in the water - it was pretty damm chilly and we were not interested in any swimming this visit.

The wind got colder as the night went on and we were in bed early to warm up.
