Road Trip 2016 - Day 13 (20th July) - Darling - Murray Rivers Confluence at Wentworth!!

On waking this morning - it was still pretty dark and dismal looking - but at least was not raining at all.

Well that didn't last long did it!!!  -  but at least it was only very light occasional sprays of rain - and we were able to get breakfast over and packed up with out too much hassle.

The mud we picked up yesterday along our drive is now depositing itself in Pooncarie --

* the ute - minus a nice chunk of mud from the mudflap

* the tvan - minus a nice blob of mud as well

And the scene at our campsite this morning

Unfortunately the Darling River here in Pooncarie is pretty sad - not much to look at - and seems to be "puddles" just back along a bit. It is not flowing!!

At least our journey this morning would be an easy one - as it is all tar from here to Wentworth.
Yes - there is a change of plan!!!
We cannot get into Mungo NP from just south of Pooncarie (as originally planned) - the road in was closed yesterday afternoon, we are told, - and with the rain overnight will definitely not be open today.

So onto Wentworth we will go for a couple of days - and then see if we can get out to Mungo NP from down near Buronga.

We start to see some red sand dunes as we are coming into Wentworth

Because the weather looks a bit dodgy at the moment around this area - we decide to go check into the Willow Bend Caravan Park in Wentworth. It's right in town and on the Darling River - just near the confluence of the Murray-Darling rivers. It's just a 5 minute walk into the small shopping precinct here.

It actually turns into a beautiful afternoon and we get a couple of loads of washing done - even the sheets and towels - prob the only wash they might get for a while!!

Our campsite is literally on the riverbank - so very relaxing!!  There is much entertainment from the many many Pelicans feeding in the waters here - also lots of ducks and other birdlife surround us.

We head off for a mid-afternoon walk around the local area - eventually finding ourselves walking out along a nature conservation area - a peninsula that ends at the confluence of the Murray and Darling Rivers.

Here is Ruth taking in the scene - the joining of these two major river systems in Australia

The sunset scene is spectacular this evening - with the light in the old water tank across from our campsite making a stunning picture for us.
