Sunday 20th April, 2014: Birdsville to Innaminka, via Walkers Crossing Track

We drove into Birdsville in the dark last night after some playing around at "Big Red" and "Little Red" and checked into the Birdsville Caravan Park.

All the tents were up in a flash - as we were in a hurry to get to the Birdsville Pub for dinner tonight and it was getting onto 7.30 by the time everyone was all sorted, showered and dressed and ready to go

The pub was pumping with lots of visitors eating there this Easter Saturday - apparently they had 10 people for dinner the night before and they ended up serving 200 the night we were there.
We had to wait for about an hour for dinner - but we were happy there enjoying a few drinks and just enjoying the atmosphere of this historic outback pub in the far west outback of Qld on the edge of the Simpson Desert.

This morning everyone was doing their own thing.
We did some washing, had breakfast at the Birdsville Bakery with Cindy and Russ,  checked out the local sights, topped up with fuel and washed some of the mud off the car.

On a mission to the Birdsville Bakery for Breakfast!!  We travelled the Simspon Desert just to have breakfast at this iconic bakery.

The iconic Birdsville Hotel - one of the must see and do sights in Birdsville.

We were pretty happy with the fuel economy with the Hilux from Mt Dare to Birdsville - we used 65ltrs of diesel for this journey.

Everyone was back together and ready to head off at about 11.30ish this morning.
We had decided not to stay another night in Birsdville - but instead to drive this afternoon to Innamincka.

We headed out of town on the Birsdville Track and then turned off onto "Walkers Crossing Track" heading through an area of gas fields and then onto Innamincka. So the road varied quite significantly depending on whether it was a section of road being used by the gas fields.

The road was pretty desolate - except for a few cattle

And thee were very few trees - not good when you need a piddle stop

On this track into Innamincka we were able to stop at a couple of historic points of interest - namely Wills Grave and Kings Grave - of the fateful Burke & Wills expedition.

Firstly there was Wills Grave ----

At this location there is also a marker on the tree showing where the 2010 flood level came to - it's pretty hard for us to imagine the creek reaching this height.

Then a little further up the Coopers Creek - we come to Kings Blaze

Tonight we set up camp at Innamincka Town Common - just walking distance into this tiny iconic village - and on the banks of Coopers Creek.

There were a some gorgeous scenes along the creek as sunset approached this evening

Just magnificent!!!
